Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A. Abbott Written in the late 1800s, Flatland is part Victorian era social commentary and part science fiction adventure. It's about the life of A. Square, his two-dimensional world, and the day a three-dimensional sphere visits him. It provides a charming atmosphere to learn about thinking in different dimensions and is written in a very approachable -- if, at times, archaic -- style. By His Bootstraps by Robert A. Heinlein Bob Wilson receives a visit from a mysterious stranger, and his life will never be the same again! (Wow. How cliched was that description?) One of the best time travel stories I've ever read. War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells The classic Martian invasion story. Who Goes There by John W. Campbell, Jr The short story the movie The Thing was based on. A group of scientists in the antarctic discover the frozen remains of an alien. Unbeknownst the them, the creature is not dead, and it can absorb any lifeform and assume its form. One by one it starts to replace the scientists in the secluded antactic research station... At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft A story from the undisputed master of classic horror writing. An antarctic expedition leads to the discovery of strange fossils and a strange, ancient city... For more of Lovecraft's stories, check out The Works of H. P. Lovecraft A scientist discovers how to keep severed heads alive, and, well, you can see where this is going. Imprisoned with the Pharaos by H. P. Lovecraft Trapped beneath the sands of Egypt, our hero makes a shocking discovery about ancient Egyptian mythology. The Dunwich Horror by H. P. Lovecraft A tale of a mysterious family and the horrors brought upon a town by their magical meddlings. The Lurking Fear by H. P. Lovecraft A seeker of ghostly horrors decides to explorer a reputedly haunted mansion. The Nameless City by H. P. Lovecraft An adventurer explores the ruins of an ancient, cursed city in the Middle East. The Picture in the House by H. P. Lovecraft A traveller finds an odd book in an old house on a deserted road. Short and creepy. The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H. P. Lovecraft A suspenseful tale about a young man passing through an old, coastal town with a terrifying secret. One of Lovecraft's best stories. The Shadow Out of Time by H. P. Lovecraft An interesting story about a man's strange journey to an ancient civilization. Knock by Fredric Brown The world's shortest science fiction story. It really provokes the imagination. |
